Laurelwood Releases Green Elephant IPA in bottles

From the desk at Laurelwood Brewing Co.:

The Green Elephant is big, strong, and green -- organic that is. A relative of the American IPA, the Green Elephant takes big hop flavor to the next level. Brewed with 100% organic malt, Cascade, Amarillo and Ahtanum hops, this is a unique and beautiful creature. The Green Elephant's smooth and subtle malt character gives way to a bold, aggressive hop flavor. But be warned, this is one elephant that can sneak up on you.

Spring about to Spring at Ft. George Brewing

The Astoria brewery celebrates one year in business, brews a special beer for mom, and the first lager in Clatsop County since Prohibition.

Enjoy a pint of The Illuminator at Ft. George on Mother's Day, May 11, 2008

Astoria, Oregon's Fort George Brewery announced the forthcoming release of the Illuminator. Not just any old doppelbock, according to brewer and owner Chris Nemlowill, the beer will weigh in at around 10% ABV and has been sitting in Jim Beam barrels for the last four months. Nemlowill says the brew is "warm and inviting, the beautiful, dark brown color sparkles as it catches the light. Illuminator tastes rich and malty, with an intriguing hint of bourbon, and a nice dry slightly hoppy finish to balance it out.”

Nemlowill says of a good bock: "It's a sign of spring. It hasn't felt like spring in Astoria yet. Mother's Day is the day (when) I feel spring really begins here. The Farmer's Market opens this day."

The brewery is also featuring the Lovell Lager. Named for the family who originally owned the building, the Lovells operated a car dealership and autobody shop at the current Fort George location. Nemlowill says, "This beer is a part of history. There hasn't been much written about the history of brewing in the area. (Lovell Lager) is the first lager produced in Clatsop County since the Prohibition. The last brewery here to make a lager was North Pacific Brewing Company."

Fort George celebrated their one year anniversary on March 9, 2008. "On March 1st, we introduced our mug club and sold out of mugs in two weeks. The response from locals has been fabulous" says Nimlowill. "People heading home from their jobs stop by and enjoy our beers and that is great."

Fort George will feature some delicious brews at the Green Dragon on Tuesday May 6. Nimlowill's partner Jack Harris will be on hand to showcase popular brews such as the robust Coffee Girl Imperial Stout.
