Astoria Brewing Looking for New Brewer!

Astoria Brewing Co. Looking For New Head Brewer

Wet Dog Cafe/Astoria Brewing Co. is looking for a new head brewer. Or they would also entertain having someone fill in as a contract brewer until they find the right person.

Contact Steve Allen, owner, at steve@allenpcas.com for more information.

Usual disclaimers apply. I just happen to like their Bitter Bitch Double IPA a lot!

(Speaking of which, Steve assures me that he will squirrel away a few kegs of the BB for the Spring Beer & Wine Fest. It was the People's Choice last year!)

Cheers,

Lisa Morrison

Get Schooled at the 14th Annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest

This just in from a Beer Goddess:

PORTLAND, OR -- What does an education taste like? Find out at the 14th annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest, it might be the sublime flavors of a bite of blue cheese paired with a sip of an India Pale Ale or the tantalizing tastes of perfectly grilled salmon with an Oregon pinot gris.

No matter what tastes you discover, you'll get some schooling at the Spring Beer & Wine Fest, March 21 & 22 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. With the motto "A Taste of the Best," the Fest is a sampler of the finest among local and regional wine, beer, spirits and food.

"The essence of the festival is mixing entertainment with educating taste buds," says event promoter Steve Woolard.

A success in its first year, the Tour de Cheese has expanded, and features tempting samples from world-class cheese makers. Festival-goers are encouraged to find their favorite flavor combinations by trying different cheeses with their beverage samples.

Looking for some extra credit? Check out the Chef's Stage, where you can watch special demonstrations on cooking with wine, beer or spirits -- and eat the tasty results from the class. Or, sit in on a seminar. Several will be held each day, including a repeat of last year's standing-room-only Cheese Smackdown, a "battle" between wine and beer experts as they match their beverages with selected cheese -- and let the audience decide which pairing is best.

"It's kind of like the American Idol of food," says fest Marketing Director Lisa Morrison, adding that other seminars include Chocolate 101, Classy Cocktails With Indie Spirits and a panel discussion on beer and food pairings with some of the industry's brightest luminaries.

The Spring Beer & Wine Fest also is a competition for both wineries and breweries, with experts judging entries either ahead of the festival, as is the case with wineries, or during the fest, which what happens for breweries. Winners are announced at the fest, which can help attendees discover something new to sip. Fest-goers also are encouraged to participate in the People's Choice awards and name their favorite quaffs at the fest!

Even the most studious of classmates wants a break once in a while, which is why the Music Stage will be kicking it up with some of the Northwest's hottest bands, including The Insomniacs and Eric Hatcher and the Worker Bees, Ty Curtis and Sweet City Slang.

"The festival encourages responsible drinking by additional features such as cooking demonstrations, outstanding live music with a dance floor and our Food Court, offering gourmet items from local restaurants," Woolard says. "Even our vendors and exhibitors have products and services -- including arts and crafts, jewelry and massages -- for those looking for more to do."

So sharpen your wits and your taste buds, because glass is in session at the Spring Beer & Wine Fest. An education never tasted so good!

BridgePort to releases bourbon Old Knucklehead in bottles

After a few years without finding its way into bottles, BridgePort Brewing's Old Knucklehead Barley Wine Style Ale, No. 12, salutes a pillar in the local brewing community, John De Benedetti, as the latest "knucklehead." Since 1989, BridgePort has honored figureheads in the community with this esteemed honor. De Benedetti joins the ranks of Fred Eckhardt and former Mayor Bud Clark as people in which the beer has been dedicated. De Benedetti, the steward and owner of F.H. Steinbart Company, provided essentials to BridgePort’s brewmaster, Karl Ockert, when he was making his first batches of home brew in his mother’s basement.

Brewed with double the malts and hops and aged in bourbon barrels, the 12th vintage of Old Knucklehead is a slightly stronger version at 10-percent ABV (alcohol by volume) and will be sold in 22-ounce bottles.

"What gives the bourbon a nice vanilla flavor is the American oak." said Ockert "What it does for the beer is it really compliments that malty caramelly flavor. By putting ten percent of the beer in the oak, it gave it complexity in the finish as compared to the finished beer as compared to a regular heavy ale. Twice the amount of barley and three times the amount of hops that a regular beer would be."

BridgePort's Old Knucklehead Barley Wine Style Ale, No. 12 Stats:
IBU's: 60
ABV: 10.0%
Color: Dark Amber, Toffee
Ingredients: English and American hops, blended with three types of pale and
roasted malts.
Description: A barley wine style ale that is aged in American Oak Bourbon
barrels, creating notes of vanilla, toffee and sherry.

On Tuesday, February 5 at 6 p.m. BridgePort is hosting a changing of the "knuckleheads," a "knuckling-in" ceremony and tapping of a cask conditioned Old Knucklehead firkin. Free and open to the public, attendees can be among the first to sample the new brew and purchase the limited-edition 22-ounce bottles of Old Knucklehead. The Old Knucklehead release celebration is at BridgePort brewpub and bakery in the Pearl at 1313 NW Marshall St.

According to the company, seventy-five barrels, or 1,100 cases, of BridgePort’s Old Knucklehead have been made. Beginning February 5th, 2008, beer enthusiasts will be able to find BridgePort’s Old Knucklehead on tap at BridgePort brewpub and bakery, BridgePort Ale House and other draft outlets. Twenty-two-ounce bottles will be sold at BridgePort brewpub and bakery and at finer grocery retailers in the Portland area.
