Beer Northwest hits the streets!
The much-anticipated premier issue of Beer Northwest is finally here! According to Megan Flynn "It's been a spring and summer of super hard work, but it has paid off. My designer and I picked the mag up from the press on Friday evening and headed up to Seattle for the debut at the Fremont Oktoberfest. For those of you unfamiliar with Beer Northwest, it is a quarterly magazine featuring brew, food, and lifestyle in the Northwest, specifically Oregon and Washington. We are profiling chefs, have local beer event listings, recent openings, neighborhood guides, and more!"
Distribution:
the first issue will be somewhat randomly distributed throughout Oregon and Washington, but Megan says that she will be focusing specifically on breweries and pubs that serve a good selection of NW beer. Checkout her website soon for locations on where you can find Beer Northwest.
Subscriptions are available online at www.beernw.com.
Bodacious Belgian Beers for Bitchin' Babes
Although I am involved in the following event, I am donating my time. So this is not a commercial posting for my personal benefit. At least not too much, unless you consider it shameless self promotion to try to get some women who want to try Belgian beers to join us on Saturday. Is that so wrong? :)
"… we have nothing in common except a king, chocolate and beer," an extreme Flemish proponent recently said of the rift between Belgian's Dutch-speaking Flanders region and the French-speaking Wallonia.
Kelly Stewart, owner of the Purple Tooth Lounge, and Lisa Morrison, also known as Portland's Beer Goddess, think the beer and chocolate part sounds like a good start, at least.
The two are teaming together to present a women-only Belgian beer tasting, complete with chocolates, cheeses and other gastronomical delights.
You don't have to be a Walloon or Flemish, but you do have to be a woman to enjoy "Bodacious Belgians for Bitchin' Babes," a two-hour tasting that meanders between Belgium's two feuding regions pairing chocolates, cheese and other treats with some of Belgium's finest beers -- with Morrison leading the way.
"No politics will be discussed," Morrison said. "Here, we will speak Beer."
The event costs $30 per person and is slated for Saturday, Sept. 29 from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. at Purple Tooth Lounge, 938 N. Cook St. Reservations are encouraged. Call 503- 517-9931 for more details or to make reservations.
"Bodacious Belgians for Bitchin' Babes" promises to be a tasty journey to enjoy some of Belgium's most accessible and delightful beers. No kings allowed!

Beer. Chocolate. Cheese. Really, how can you resist? Hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Lisa Morrison

Full Sail Brewmaster Dinners looks great!

"If there is one thing a brewer loves more than great beer - it is great food and great beer. For us exploring beer flavors and food combinations has been a long held passion. Full Sail can't think of a better way to celebrate their 20th anniversary than by launching our new Brewmaster's Dinner menu at their Pub. Full Sail has been doing Brewmaster dinners for over 15 years and now the completion of their new kitchen and the very enthusiastic involvement of their brewers and chef enables them to celebrate the marriage of food and beer in their own way," said Irene Firmat, Full Sail's CEO & Founder.
Every Thursday night Full Sail will present a Brewmaster's menu that takes you through four different courses with a special beer pairing. The menu will change based on the seasonality of the ingredients and the release of the brewery's seasonal and reserve programs.
Just order the Brewmaster's menu and Full Sail's pub staff will serve their current celebration of food and beer while you can sit back, take in the view and enjoy. Each menu will feature comments by our Brewmaster and Chef on why the pairings were chosen. The first menu will include a beer specially brewed for Full Sail's 20th anniversary and will be available only in their Pub.
The Brewmaster's Dinners will begin on Full Sail's 20th Anniversary date, Thursday, September 27, 2007, and continue every Thursday evening. The cost of the dinner including beer is $20 per person. The menu will be served from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. Quantities are limited. (Full Sail's regular menu will also
be available.) For more information about the dinners call the Full Sail Tasting Room and Pub at 541-386-2247.

Rosemary Infused Lompoc Strong Draft Now Available at Lompoc's Fifth Quadrant
The Lompoc Fifth Quadrant is at 3901-B N. Williams Ave., Portland.

They had a special brewers release party of the rosemary-infused LSD. This beer features fresh sprigs of rosemary cold-conditioned with our smoky, hoppy, dark Lompoc Strong Draft. It was brewed by assistant brewer Jonathan Berry to have an intense rosemary nose and herbal and gingerbread notes on the palate.
They have teaming this with Chef Aaron Becker's Old Red Wine beef short ribs, braised with rosemary and garlic and served with a polenta made from Oregon Rogue Creamery blue cheese, and served with a mixed herb gremolata.

Los Angeles’ best-kept pub secrets
Thank you.
Cheers! Prost!
In Los Angeles, everyone is an aspiring something-or-other. Even in seemingly obscure, off-the-beaten-path bars frequented by the down-to-earth crowd, this fact can’t be escaped. It’s what makes this city a surreal experience in and of itself … even without a beer. Good beer certainly helps, however. Tucked away between stuffy martini bars and trendy boutiques is a cozy, inconspicuous pub in Santa Monica called Father’s Office. In addition to offering the best burger in town, Father’s Office has one of the most impressive beer lists in Los Angeles. In a city notorious for its superficiality, Father’s Office is a rare gem where a beer lover can enjoy a glass of Russian River’s Pliny the Elder or MacTarnahan’s Blackwatch Cream Porter with a delectable order of sweet-potato fries. The friendly, easygoing staff members will astound any beer expert with their extensive knowledge. They’ll also share outrageous anecdotes of disastrous acting auditions to anyone who will listen. Fortunately for beer connoisseurs interested in visiting the entertainment capital of the world, there are other hidden treasures like Father’s Office in the area that you won’t find in a travel guide. A trip to the Golden State wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the beach, and nothing caps a trip to the beach like a tasty craft brew. One
outlet of the local chain Hennessey’s Tavern, located at the base of Hermosa Beach pier, is just minutes away from downtown Los Angeles — assuming traffic is good, of course. With the honey-blond wood tables, green-padded chairs, and a striped flag hanging proudly outside the door, Hennessey’s is the epitome of the classic Irish pub. From a window table on the second level, you can enjoy a breathtaking ocean view and surgically enhanced flesh-gazing. Mouthwatering menu selections like corned beef and cabbage and beer-battered onion rings sustain patrons as they sample the 15 domestic and imported beers on tap. House favorites include Mickey Finn’s Irish Stout and Smithwick’s from Ireland. If visiting the numerous museums, historical sites and famous movie locations in the heart of downtown strikes your fancy, Bonaventure Brewing Co.
is the perfect spot for an intermission. Famous for its “beers to go” list, BBC is a favorite lunch spot of nearby Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures studio executives and directors hoping to become the next Spielberg. The Belmont Strawberry Blonde Ale is brewed on site, and with its light and fruity smoothness, it’s the perfect complement to the beer-battered calamari and metropolitan view of the city. The seasonal and “guest” beer selections are assured gambles as well. To round out your stay in LaLa Land, an afternoon of sightseeing along the Walk of Fame is a must. When the temporary starry eyes and pipe dreams eventually fade into the fiery California sunset, Red Rock Bar and Grill in West Hollywood is the place to end the day. With a college sports bar look and feel, this neighborhood joint is popular with the locals because it lacks the pretentiousness, cover charge and two-hour wait time for which Hollywood establishments are famous. The menu offers typical coffee-shop fare such as soups, salads and sandwiches, but Red Rock is best known for its vast tap selection. Although a staple in most bars, there’s something about the Newcastle on tap that causes one to fall in love with the Brits all over again. While many trendy watering holes in Los Angeles will leave you disappointed, penniless, thirsty and exhausted from standing in line, these indie places will leave beer-lovers content, satisfied, and successful in their aspirations to visit the best pubs in the city. And who knows – you may even see the next big thing sitting on the barstool next to you. Friday, September 14, 2007

This Grand Opening beer is their way of saying, "Welcome to our new home." This celebration of a new brewery and restaurant is made with Pacific Northwest-grown Organic malt and a generous dose of Yakima-grown hops.
