On the Muddy Rudder Public House

On the Muddy Rudder Public House
by Michael O'Shaughnessy, Local

At long last...lager! Or cream ale, actually. What have I fallen in love with now? It's the Muddy Rudder Public House on 7th and Tacoma in Sellwood. My friends and I have had our eye on this joint for many months now, watching its construction, and drooling at the prospect of a pub we could literally crawl to (but mostly likely from). We attended its "soft opening" on May 29th. From the cool amber glow of the wooden interior to the small rug-draped stage area, to the smaller sign at the back of the bar reading "Hippies - Use Side Door", the Muddy Rudder exudes a most comfortable atmosphere for dining.

Six of us took over a round table by the fireplace, and yapped the evening away. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. Perfect! Onto the menu: We ate the Marseille sandwich (Tuscano salami, fresh mozzarella & sliced tomato on a buttered baguette), the Eugene (avocado, sprouts, cucumber, tomato, mixed baby greens and black olive hummus or cream cheese with fresh cracked Tellicherry pepper and Fleur de Sel sea salt, served on your choice of bread), and the Sebastopol (grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, caramelized garlic & Humboldt fog goat cheese, with a drizzle of white truffle oil on a baguette). All three sandwiches were unanimously praised.

But most delightful of all for me was the Guinness on nitro. I was almost hypnotized by the cascading foam in the glass. High praise also for the Pelican Cream! Other delicious local brews are available. Their menu states "Whenever possible we use local, all natural & organic products." Yet another worthwhile reason to frequent this pub!

As if this wasn't enough, we also had the pleasure of listening to Laura Sheehan singing and playing folk and blues on her guitar. The few songs I heard over the din of our lively table were terrific, and further pointed to the anticipated possibilities of the Muddy Rudder Public House, a welcome addition to the culture and cuisine of Sellwood.

Editors notes:
Opening on Tuesday, May 29th in Sellwood was Muddy Rudder Public House. This new pub opens and the talk is about Pelican’s Cream Ale! Located at 8105 SE 7th Avenue on the corner of Tacoma and 7th. On tap at the opening night at the Muddy Rudder was a nice selection of taps: Laurelwood Red, Roots Red, Pelican Kiwanda Cream Ale, Pelican IPA, Bridgeport IPA, Guinness, Boddington's, Pilsner Urquel, Caldera Amber, Lagunita's IPA. Very nice space.

Just tried this place out for the first time on Saturday night (6/2/07). Really enjoyed the atmosphere: basic, warm (literally), nothing pretentious about it. No one stared too hard when we – my beau and our four Eastside friends – bellowed dirty jokes. It was packed but we arrived at dinnertime and Sellwood doesn't have too many places quite like that. Oaks Bottom (on Bybee) rules, but it’s always uber-packed! The Sellwood's not bad at all... but really dark. Another option is always nice, especially if the beer selection is fine. I thoroughly enjoyed the Caldera Amber and the Lagunita’s IPA. ALSO LOVE that this place is smoke-free… like another one of my favorite joints – the Concordia Ale House on NE 33rd and Killingsworth.

We were going to check Muddy Rudder out today (8/11/07) and tried to call ahead to get hours. Information has no listing for them; I found one online with DEX but the number had been changed to an unpublished listing. So is this place real?

We recently checked out the Muddy Rudder
(8/16) and were immediately impressed with what we saw starting with the decor and ambiance of this quaint little joint. Set in what looks like a very nicely restored older home, it's a place where you can come in, relax, unwind, have a good burger (which was garden for me) and beer while hanging out with friends. We also happened to catch some live music while we were there-- The Wicky Pickers --playing some folk and bluegrass tunes. The service was
great, very friendly but not over bearing. Nothing but good times here! Now what more could you ask for? Great food, drinks, music, and service. Check this place out. You won't be disappointed!

Wow, I'm reading these posts, and I can't believe my experiences with the Muddy Rudder have been so different! I live right around the corner, and I was thrilled that we have a new place to eat/drink in the neighborhood. This was the third and last time we'll try this place.

When we got there for dinner, the main room was empty but all the tables were unbussed--only one other table in the place was occupied. I caught the eye of several people behind the bar to indicate that we wanted to sit down--all looked right at me then just looked away. (I didn't know it was
'sit where you want'--we had a kid with us, and I was unsure if he could go up to the bar area)
We finally went up to the bar and were told to sit anywhere. Five minutes later, a waitress came to inform us of where the menus were. I asked about the soup on the menu--no soup. We all asked for ice water (it was 86 degrees). No ice on the premises. No ice in the entire place? Seriously???? I've never heard such a thing. Anyway, we finally ordered, and the food was skimpy, but tasted fine. My son had to have a peanut butter sandwich, because it's the only thing on the menu for kids. Service was terribly slow, and the waitress was arrogant. I have tried really hard to like this place, but I will now go back to Oaks Bottom--same concept, but they have really got it right. (Friendly service, ICE, stuff for kids, etc.) Sadly, I seriously doubt this place will last...

The Last comment pretty much discribed my experience with the place, too. I am sorry to say I really wanted to see the place make it, but I too had a very bad experience there. Oaks Bottom is so better! Too bad, because this place had potential.
Cheers!

I LOVED this place! I went for the first time in July, and had a great experience. We've been back a few times since then, and always found the service more than polite and helpful, and the beer was fresh and tasty. Can't wait to go back!

the muddy rudder is a cool place. I live down the street and love the vibe of the place. They have a couple of bugs to work out. Just minor things, though, like getting an ice machine. I can't really think of anything else. They have rotating beers so it seems like an endless selection from a regulars point of view. 10 taps at the bar!! The food was awesome and the cook is really fast. heck yea!! I dig them being around

I really like this place to have a glass of wine and the meat & cheese tray is very good. The music is nice and lot's of cool things to look at. They do have some things to work on but it never stops me from going there. There is cards & some games too to play. The owner is delightful & so handsome I can hardly contain myself!

I agree that the Guiness on nitro is great, they serve great IPA's, also. But, the food does kind of suck. The food at Oaks Bottom is very much better. I think they have the atmosphere and beer thing nailed - they just need a better cook! I want the place to succeed.

Seriously, in my 15 years of living here and enjoying many meals, good to bad, the one I had last night hit a new low. If I had the cash, i'd take out an ad against this place. the inedible food included what we reffered to a s "salmon gum," smoked? or just overcooked? who knew but apparently you CAN chip a tooth on fish. The place was ice cold, the service-was there service? i think they're still processing our orders, but worse, truly,w as the irresponsibility of the bartenders in letting two customers leave at 9:30 pm SO DRUNK that they were literally reeling into the walls. Shame on them.
