BridgePort Supris!

by
Dave Dronkowski C.M.C.

What a nice Surprise! I just had my first bottle of the new Big Beautiful Blond Ale from Portland's BridgePort Brewery. It was a very smooth Belgium style Blond Ale and I must say very tasty. < http://www.suprisbeer.com>. It is about time that a Portland brewery stepped up to what I believe is one of the most under explored style in the US. I raise my beer glass to you, Karl Ockert
& BridgePort! Cheers!

Supris Surprise -- A Belgian-style blonde ale from BridgePort, the folks who've made their reputation with ales that'd pass muster in most any pub on That Sceptred Isle? True story.

It's called Supris and it's that, right enough -- and it should be on grocers' shelves near you by the time you read this. Brewmaster Karl Ockert and I sampled some recently. Right off, we noticed a similarity to a beer we first tasted a decade ago -- BridgePort's then-new and untested India Pale Ale. "This has that big aroma the second you pop the cap," Ockert said. So does IPA, though it radiates a grapefruity hit of hops; a newly opened bottle of Supris fills the room with a rich perfume of Belgian yeast.

Which is only fitting, seeing as how the BridgePort folks went to some trouble isolating and cultivating the yeast from bottles of an unnamed Belgian beer brought home from a recent European trip. "We wanted a real Belgian yeast," said Ockert. "We didn't want to use a domestic strain -- we didn't want to put out another pale ale."

No worries there: Supris is a unique beer with the strong yeast character they wanted and a tart, citrusy, refreshing flavor that should play well in the warmer months -- it's intended as seasonal for the months from January to September. During this season, it's a nice respite from bigger, darker beers. "It's a new flavor profile for us," said Ockert, " and we want to see who it appeals to. People who drink mainly wine might like this.

"We wanted the beer to look different, too; we wanted it to look as light and inviting as it tastes. We wanted a beer that if you saw it on the bar, you'd know it was your beer." They succeeded there, too: Supris is pale gold and hazy -- some of it yeast haze from secondary fermentation in the bottle, some of it chill haze. It looks almost like a witbier in the glass.

The first production brews were made after a dozen test brews at a pilot brewery at Oregon State University. Commercial breweries can rent the facility for just this purpose, and Ockert said it speeded development, giving them the freedom to ring the changes on all aspects of the recipe, including brewing Supris with an alcohol content as high as 10 percent before settling on about 6 percent.

We savored a second sample and Ockert reminded me of another potential similarity with the brewery's flagship India Pale Ale. "This may always be a niche beer," he said, "but at first, that's what we thought IPA would be, too. We never thought a beer that hoppy would become our biggest seller."

I think people often overlook the importance of grooming their pets as a way to contribute to their overall good health. Here are just a few more tips on pet grooming. You must groom your pets whole body including the legs, tail, and underbody if you want to do it right.
You must groom certain pets from the skin outward to truly be effective in taking care of their coat of hair and keeping it healthy. Comb through the unseen healthy hair and remove the shedding hair; this is what most groomers do first before cutting your pet's coat. You must groom some animals all at once while some other animals have so much hair that it is esier to do a little at a time each day. You know your pet is well mannerd when it will sit still and alow you or a professional to perform regular grooming and maintenence without any fuss. If you feel you just don't have the time or desire to do it yourself, its time to call the professionals. Your dog will love you for it, and you'll feel great about it too. Hope this was helpful.
